Do3’s long weekend of racing - Weekend round up 28 – 29thJuly

Warwickshire’s triathlon squad, Do3, was out in force at the weekend with long distance races completed in Switzerland, Germany and the UK. The squad each drew on numerous months of endurance training to test their individual mettle over a distance of 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike and 26.2 mile run.

In the UK at Outlaw Triathlon, Nottingham competitors had to contend with blustery and wet conditions.  Neil Stannard from Stratford on Avon finished the race in 11:39:09 with Carl James, from Bidford on Avon, completing the distance in a time of 11:56:38.  Other members of Do3 taking part  in Outlaw included Mark Loosmore, Neil Bowler, Neil Wicks and Ricky Davies, while  Jason Robbins crossed the line to become an ‘Outlaw’ in 14:52:38.  Ian Dickens took part in a relay team and was the first mixed team at the event having run the marathon stage in 3:10:27.

Dawn Rahman who was racing her 5thIronman and Jan Richards from Warwick were in Germany for Ironman Hamburg. Due to soaring temperatures and algae in the water, the traditional swim element was swapped for a 6km run prior to the 112 mile bike and 26.2 mile run.

Joe Lee from Quinton took on his first ever race at full distance by racing at Ironman Switzerland. In glorious conditions, including a non-wetsuit swim, he completed the event in 12:15:58.

Other events raced by the squad included Ride London and Blithfield Triathlon in Staffordshire where Paul Squire posted a personal best time at sprint distance.

Joe Lee, Ironman Switzerland finisher comments; ‘What an amazing race in a stunning setting, I was delighted to have been announced as an ‘Ironman’ when I came over the finishing line. It’s been quite a journey improving at three disciplines while also upping my endurance and balancing work and most importantly my family. When I joined D03 18-months ago I struggled to swim 400m and had never swum in open water. However, this weekend I smashed a 3.8km in Lake Zurich and I’m in awe of what I’ve achieved thanks to Do3 and head coach, Dave Knight. The squad has given me focus and a community of equally committed and driven people to train with and to learn from. It’s genuinely been one of the most inspiring  adventures in my life.’

Dave Knight, head coach, says; ‘It’s been another weekend of fantastic feats by every single person. Full distance racing demands endurance, tenacity and some serious hours training.  Everyone who took part deserves a huge commendation for the time they put in and the results they’ve achieved. Like their families, I’m immensely proud of what they achieved and how they continue to raise the bar for Do3 triathletes.’

Do3 is mentored and managed by Dave Knight, one of the UK’s leading triathlon coaches and has been recognised as Coach of the Year at Stratford District Council Sport Awards. The squad is made up of over 200 Midlands-based athletes; from triathlon enthusiasts and age group competitors to professional athletes.
